We have more than 1,800 volunteers who donate their time and skills to help us end cruelty to all animals. Without the support of so many committed volunteers, we simply could not care for the thousands of animals that come through our doors each year.
There is no ‘one type’ of volunteer at RSPCA Victoria. We have a diverse range of people fulfilling a range of roles across the organisation. No matter your skillset, your location or your time commitment, there is a way you can give back through volunteering!
Some of the volunteering roles at RSPCA Victoria include:
- Animal care volunteer – supporting the animal care sites to care for animals and run smoothly day to day.
- Office volunteer – supporting the office-based teams in their everyday work.
- Op shop volunteer – raising money through RSPCA Victoria op shops.
- Events volunteer – support our annual events such as Million Paws Walk.
- Foster carer – providing a temporary home for a shelter animal before adoption.

How to become a volunteer at RSPCA Victoria
Age requirement
The minimum age to volunteer is 15 years, however some roles require our volunteers to be 18.
Application process
All candidates will be required to complete an application for the role they are interested in. Candidates may only apply for one role, however once accepted as a volunteer you may also apply for other roles internally. Some roles will require an interview process to further assess a candidate’s suitability.

Induction and onboarding
All volunteers will be required to undertake online learning modules prior to volunteering at RSPCA Victoria. After this, volunteers will attend an on-site induction to help them understand their role and the location where they are volunteering, learn important health and safety requirements and of course, meet the team and animals!
Time commitment
For most roles we ask you can commit to shifts of four hours each week or fortnight for a minimum of six months. Although some other volunteering roles are more flexible in their time commitment.

Foster care volunteer
Animal foster carers provide short and long-term homes for animals who aren’t ready for adoption. Foster care is a rewarding volunteer experience that improves the wellbeing of animals in need and reduces the amount of time animals spend in a shelter environment.
How to become an animal foster carer
Every animal has unique needs, but fostering periods generally range from two weeks to six months. We have cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even livestock that require fostering to ready them for adoption. Apply to become a foster carer today.
